Dr R. C. Clifft, Associate Dean

Welcome

Welcome to the website for the ASU College of Engineering. We are excited that you have chosen to visit our site and hope that you find the information you need. As you will see, we are very proud of our engineering programs at ASU.

The College of Engineering continues to change to meet the demanding challenges of education in the 21st century. We are committed to providing a quality educational opportunity in the engineering fields that are needed by the residents of Arkansas and our regional constituents. In addition to the Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE) which has been offered for many years, we now offer discipline-specific bachelor’s degrees in Civil Engineering (BSCE), Electrical Engineering (BSEE), and Mechanical Engineering (BSME). Also, we have added a Master of Engineering Management (MEM) degree to fulfill the needs of regional employers and to provide additional coursework that may be required for those seeking professional licensing.

Several years ago we began a process to periodically examine all aspects of our programs and to implement a continuous improvement plan to ensure continued excellence. In that effort, we discovered that our constituency has three fundamental needs: ABET accreditation of programs, quality faculty and facilities, and jobs for our graduates. We are happy to say that we generally exceed these expectations. Our BSE degree program has been accredited by ABET for many years, and we are on tract to accredit the BSCE, BSEE, and BSME degree programs. In the interim period, students can obtain the ABET-accredited BSE degree and one of the discipline-specific degrees (BSCE, BSEE, or BSME) without additional coursework.

Our engineering programs are recognized regionally and nationally for their academic excellence and unique educational experience. We believe in promoting excellence in engineering education with emphasis on teaching, mentoring, and student learning. Our faculty and students are actively involved in research and consulting and are routinely recognized for their exceptional contributions. Many undergraduates gain valuable experience in research and consulting by working along side the faculty and with local industry. Major strengths of the programs, noted by students as well as accreditation teams, are the significant amount of student-faculty interaction, small class sizes that average 15, open-door policy of faculty, freedom of students to openly discuss curricular and professional as well as personal issues with faculty, and the camaraderie of their fellow students.

We are among the few engineering programs that offer a truly multidisciplinary approach that prepares graduates for the work environment that exists today. Although majoring in a discipline-specific field, all engineering students complete multiple courses with other discipline-specific engineering majors and complete a capstone design course working in multidisciplinary teams. We strive to produce graduates that are excellent communicators with ability to apply technological fundamentals to solve modern problems, and that are recognized as community leaders and team players by their peers. Our graduates are involved with economic development while promoting environmental sustainability, are committed to professional and ethical practice, and are dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge and life-long learning.

If you are not already a part of our network of faculty, students, alumni, employers and friends, we hope that you will join us soon. We look forward to seeing you on campus, so please contact me at rclifft@astate.edu or call me at 870-972-2088 to schedule a visit to learn more and get involved.
